Design & Functionality
Designed to replace paper grocery bags, the Classic Hemp Shopping Bag is the perfect size for hauling groceries. Comes in two styles to suit your preference: long handles for over-the-shoulder carrying or short-handles for easy hand-carrying. The long-handled version features straps that run around the length of the bag, and a handy outer pocket and key hook. The short-handled version features box-stitched straps, attached to the top of the bag.
Made of heavy-duty, 18 oz. hemp canvas - much stronger and more durable than cotton fabric, pound for pound. Box-stitched handles provide extra strength and reinforcement.
Materials
Made from heavyweight 18 oz. hemp, similar to jean jacket material. Hemp fabric is 4x stronger than cotton fabric of the same weight. Unlike conventionally-grown cotton, hemp has no known insect enemies and a high resistance to disease, so there is no need to use harmful pesticides in its cultivation.

These bags are not cheap, and that's a good thing, because they are a great value for the higher cost! They don't look that big, but I always find I manage to get the groceries in about a quarter of the number of bags I thought it would take. They are very attractive, but also very sturdy--I've had other cloth bags that have ripped or torn but that's never happening with these toughies. Grocery checkers always compliment me on how nice they are, and it's wonderful to not carry around a rainbow of mismatched shapes and sizes. Honestly, I was a little concerned about making this purchase because of the cost, but it's been rewarded many times over. By Mark E

These are terrific bags -- attractive, sturdy, and exceptionally spacious. Numerous checkout attendants have remarked that it's the nicest bag they've seen. Two possible issues to bear in mind: (1) Those who are short in stature may have difficulty holding the bag with their arms fully extended because it may scrape on the ground. (2) The bag is pretty heavy. Neither of these considerations is a concern for me, but both bother my wife, who prefers other, smaller bags. By Edward W

I've used these bags for grocery shopping on a weekly basis now for some time. Construction of the bags is terrific - very sturdy, holds a TON of canned goods and so forth - sometimes almost more than I can comfortably carry. The only downside that I've found so far is that the checkers at the local supermarket aren't thrilled with these. The main reason is that they are very "floppy" and don't stand up easily to be filled with items. The store sells their own recycled plastic reusables that are very stiff and stand up straight in front of the checker's position. They don't say anything to me, but it does tend to slow the checkout process down quite a bit. Now, that said, I think they'll get use to the change as more and more customers start bringing their own bags. It's a training thing. Bottom line is that these bags are very tough and easy to handle and I like them very much. By Debra S

I find the bags very useful. They are a natural color and store neatly inside one another. They work great at most stores, but the baggers at my local grocery store complain that they don't stand open on their own and they make it more difficult to pack the groceries. I like them because they can hold lots of heavy items. For the price, however, next time I'd buy something less expensive that's more apt to please the baggers. By Holly B

the bag was a different shade, that might be b/c it's' from a different batch...........the other thing is that when you order the long handled bag, at least the one i got, the handles wrap around the entire bag and are black. the other shopping bags i ordered w/ the short handles did not have black handles. small details, but if they are that different your website should show pictures for the different bags. I've purchased several of the Heavy Duty Classic Hemp Shopping Bags and absolutely love them! I didn't read the description very closely when I placed my first order, so I was pleasantly surprised to find both a roomy outside pocket and a key holder. The straps are nice and wide, so it's easy to carry. I liked them so much that I ordered more of these bags and gave them to my parents and sister as reusable "gift bags" for their Christmas presents! By Anne C

I haven't had them long, but the fabric and the construction look to be excellent. The brown color is unexpectedly rich and lovely. I was not expecting the fabric to be as soft and flubby as it is--way more supple than, say, canvas. It can be a challenge when loading and unloading, as it is more like packing groceries into a sweatshirt than into a paper grocery sack. It would be nice if there were stays in the seams to help keep it open and upright. That's my only suggestion for how to improve it, though. I am happy with the quality of the materials and construction, and looking forward to reducing the number of disposable bags that I use. Thanks! By Sarah H

Pricey, but SO worth it! These bags will last a lifetime! The bags sent to me look a little different than the one in the picture. They don't have a label on the front, just a tiny tag in the corner edge that says "HEMP." Not a big deal though. Like others have said, the color looks a bit darker in person, but it is still beautiful. I love how strong these bags feel compared to the flimsy plastic grocery bags. I fit a week's worth of groceries ($200 worth) for my family, in 4 of these bags! I had one whole bag devoted to the cold items for fridge/freezer and when I got home it was so easy to put everything away. The only thing about these bags is that they are very floppy and hard to stand up while you're packing them. But I figured out that if you put some heavier or larger items around the interior perimeter, it holds the shape while packing. The floppiness is a GOOD thing too though because I put five folded up bags into one to carry them into the store. I definitely recommend buying the "set of 4" as they are cheaper that way. I then added on two more since I wasn't sure how many I'd need on any given trip to the store. By Michelle K

Great bags! It's so nice to fit more than 3 items in a bag! And they're strong - I put a large Tide bottle plus a couple other items in the bag with no problem. Keep in mind that the color of the bag is much darker than shown on the website - still looks nice, just darker than I expected. Trying to pack items in the bag is a little tricky at first until you get the hang of it. It doesn't fit nicely into the supermarket spot for bags, so it can be somwehat awkward. It's worth the cost. While the photo of this bag shows it standing upright, it actually is floppy fabric and does not hold its shape or stand up on its own. I see this as a drawback, making the bag less convenient for grocery shopping -- but it all depends on your preference and uses for the bag. They are so strong that I stuffed one full of old telephone books (as a test) to take to the recycling center and it didn't stretch, tear, or make any weird popping noises like when you load a backpack with too much stuff. One note: The "sage" is pretty but the "natural" is outstandingly gorgeous and two to three shades darker than shown on this site(probably due to lighting effects). Fantastic bag.
