Here at the office, we're always capturing our latest ideas on whiteboards hanging all over the office. We've even gone so far as to turn an entire wall into a white board! Needless to say, we were going through a lot of dry-erase markers and were looking for a less-wasteful approach to our creative process. AusPen's refillable, non-toxic markers fit the bill. Not only do they help us keep dozens of markers out of our trashcans, they also work really well - and without harmful chemicals like Xylene used in most dry-erase markers (you know, the ones that create that strong smell). These refills help you get the most out of your AusPens, replacing about 20 disposable markers each.

AusPen's markers are made from lightweight recycled aluminum. Even if you leave the cap off, they will remain usable for more than 24 hours. When a marker does dry out, the front end unscrews off - just add 20 or 30 drops from an AusPen ink refill bottle for a "good as new" marker. Perfect for schools, offices or home use. For use on whiteboards, mirrors, windows, porcelain, and other similar smooth surfaces. Always test on a small area, first.

Tips

Avoid contact with cloth, as markers may stain. While refilling is easy and not at all messy, use of a tissue or rag can prevent any potential staining.

4.0 Good, Bad & Ugly

I bought a set last year for my classroom. The good: they did not smell, refilled well (the ink washed from my hands easily with water and soap), and I did not run out of ink. The custodians had very little trash to collect from my room. The bad: junior high students were not kind to the nibs; they wear out quickly. The box also broke when it fell about three feet to the tiled floor. (I would like it to come in an aluminum container or cloth bag, something not so fragile.) The red ink is more difficult to erase if left overnight. (I did use a damp microfiber cloth with great results.) The ugly: two markers "walked away". The purple one never was returned; and the green one, damaged and could not be used again. I would like to have more, but would be happier if someone else picked up the tab.

2.0 Good idea, but flaws in markers

We homeschool our daughter so we use dry-erase markers daily. While I like the idea of reusing the markers, I find the tips fray easily & a few of the caps are very difficult to remove. I've purposely broken/chipped the difficult caps to ease removal. Each marker has 2 nibs, but the marker no longer writes finely after the 2nd nib frays.

I teach and got the complete set this year. I used to go through a pack of dry erase markers on a weekly basis. I've used these since last fall and will have to get replacement parts (tips) and ink, but I am pleased with them overall. Colors are vibrant and they don't have that strong toxic smell. I haven't thrown away a marker in months.
