When we heard about Lunapads, we were intrigued and concerned about making such a big lifestyle change. Design & Functionality
Lunapads unique design — a pad with a removable liner on top — allows you to customize the protection you need and easily freshen throughout the day. The pad wraps around your underwear and fastens with a small plastic snap. All Lunapads Pad styles feature a thin layer of breathable nylon to help prevent soaking through. Liners are made of 2 layers of highly absorbent fleece, placed on top of the pad and secured with ric-rac bands.
Like disposable pads, you should start each day with a fresh Lunapad Pad, then change Liners as often as needed. On heavier days, you may want to change the entire Pad at some point — on light ones probably not at all. With experience, you will learn which pad style and how many liners will take you through a day.
It can take anywhere from one day to several months to incorporate your new washable pads into your monthly routine. Many women start out by just using them at night, when they’re at home, or on lighter flow days.
Materials
Lunapads Pads feature a 100% organic cotton flannel base, topped with an absorbent panel made of 2 layers 100% organic cotton fleece, and 1 layer of ultrathin nylon to minimize soaking through. Liners are made from 2 layers of 100% organic cotton fleece. Pantyliners have a 100% organic cotton flannel base, topped with a panel made of 2 layers of 100% organic cotton fleece.
Organic cotton is a far superior alternative to chemical-laden conventional cotton. More and more farmers around the world are growing cotton without costly, harmful chemicals. Their yield is high and the quality of the cotton they grow is equal to or better than conventionally grown cotton. Their methods support biodiversity and healthy ecosystems, improve the quality of soil and often use less water.
Sustainability
Each Lunapad replaces hundreds of disposable tampons and sanitary napkins over the course of its lifetime. Used and cared for as directed, Lunapads last for at least 3 to 5 years, and possibly far longer. Each year, women dispose of more than 20 billion disposable pads and tampons – that’s 10,000 menstrual pads and tampons in an average woman’s lifetime – according to waste consultant Franklin Associates. Disposable pads and tampons (including packaging and applicators) also require tremendous resources to produce, and can take hundreds of years to degrade in landfills.

Care Instructions
Lunapads can be handwashed or machine washed. Soak or rinse Lunapads in cold water prior to washing them with your regular detergent. Some women add a cleaning agent to the soaking process, but this is optional. Washed feminine pads may be air or machine-dried. They will shrink somewhat if you put them in the dryer, as they are made from cotton, but it makes them nice and soft! If staining is a concern, there are many effective non-chlorine based cleaning products available at your local natural foods store. Do not use chlorine bleach or fabric softeners as it will degrade the quality of the pads and harm the environment.
We recommend washing Lunapads once prior to using - not only does this ensure they are clean for you but it also helps to increase the absorbency.
Lunapads may be returned to us in their original condition. We accept returns on unopened, unused personal items only.

My only regret about switching to Lunapads is that I didn't do it several years earlier. The cotton is so much more comfortable and gentle to my sensitive skin than plastic was. They are also very absorbent and easy to clean. I love the cute patterns, too (there are more on their website, but reuseit only carries the organic cotton ones). Other people mentioned that they move around, but that hasn't been a problem for me. They do move a little, but for me it hasn't been enough to cause leaking or necessitate extra trips to the bathroom. I love Lunapads. By Katrina J

I decided to try LunaPads in order to be more enviromentally friendly and to get rid of the uncomfortable plastic feeling while wearing regular pads. The pads are great for nighttime wear. 2.0 Not For Me - Moves Too Much

I still want to switch to reusable menstrual pads, so I'm going to try other brands, but I won't be back to Lunapads.The wings wrap very loosely around my panties, and of course they don't stick to the panties the way disposables do, so the pad would not stay in place, shifted constantly. This was both uncomfortable and caused stains to my panties. The liner that actually gets changed also moved a lot. I expected that the material would sort of stick to itself and stay in one place, but it didn't. The rickrack was very loose, so it didn't hold the liner in place at all, and I ended up having to go to the ladies' room every 20-30 minutes to un-bunch the shifted liner. More staining. I'm also not terribly pleased with the *idea* of the rickrack, as it means whenever I put in a nice fresh liner, there are two lines of dirty rickrack against my skin.
I give a lot of credit for absorbancy. I purchased the dark colour, and it appeared to be nearly unused before I rinsed it. Turned out it had absorbed a very significant amount. That's why I'm giving it 2 stars as opposed to 1. The style is absolutely not usable for me, I was uncomfortable the entire time, it didn't stay in place to provide coverage that caught everything, but what it did catch it caught well.

Initially, I only purchased one to make sure I liked them. Well, I love them and just ordered a bunch more. But, I have to be honest; I ordered through the lunapads website b/c they had more size variety and were cheaper! I still ordered the organic ones in the purple/pink pattern b/c that color doesn't show the staining like I'm sure the natural ones would. Lunapads are sooo much more comfortable than disposables. I live in SC and go for walks and bike rides a couple times a day. I used to dread heading out in the super hot, humid summer days with a disposable on b/c it was just so gross feeling. This product is made of soft cotton, and is very comfortable. I can honestly say that it is more comfortable than store-bought pads that make me feel like I am wearing a diaper as the plastic crinkles...ugh! I never really thought about how this could be an option when my period comes around. It's very smart, a money-saver, and an amazing environmental solution! I always felt sooooo terrible about disposing of the many pads and liners that are made of plastic and who-know-what. Besides, I already spend time soaking things before I do laundry...what trouble could one more small item be? It's a little bit of work to be environmentally responsible, but it's worth it to feel you are making a dent in this world problem that is slowly being solved by awareness and action! By Michelena W

These pads seem to be absorbent, and I like that they are made of organic cotton. However, I have other org. cotton pads which are dyed (eco-friendly, non-toxic) with a busy pattern which helps to somewhat camouflage the inevitable staining which will result with all reusable menstrual pads. These off-white pads offer no such cover up, which isn't a performance issue, more of an aesthetics thing - completely personal preference. Secondly, I do find that the removable second layer liner, which is held in with rickrack, and not connected with the wings of the base layer, tends to bunch up a little and shifts somewhat with wearing. If there was some other way to keep it in place, or better attached to the main base layer, that would be a design improvement. For the price I would have expected a 5 out of 5. I've purchased other reusable pads like this which are better designed and higher quality for less than half of what these Lunapads cost. Google search "mama cloth" and you will find a plethora of work-at-home small businesses who are producing a better product. By Candice G

I have been using washable, reusable pads for almost two years. I have tried several different varieties, but these beat the rest, hands-down. Lunapads are wonderful -- comfortable, easy to clean, functional (brilliant?), easy to customize -- and they help me feel better about lessening my impact on the environment. What more can you ask for? Actually, I genuinely prefer using Lunapads and a mooncup to any conventional products (and this from a former die-hard "Always with Dry-Weave" girl). If you've been thinking about making a change to washables, the regular pad and liner combo is great for controlling and staying fresh on average flow days (with no mooncup) or as a confident back-up for the mooncup on those long, heavy flow days. I just wanted to tell you, I purchased my first set of Lunapads in January 2002, and I'm never going back. I've tried other reusable/washable pads, but Lunapads are much softer, they wash better, and they're more absorbent. It was great not to notice liquid staying on top of the pad when I'd go to change the liner, the fleece actually ABSORBED.
