We launched our real-time Plastic Bag Ticker in 2003 as a way to wake people up to the problem of plastic bag consumption & the massive scale of worldwide consumption on an annual basis. Based on the US National Debt Clock, it’s a staggering, daily reminder of the staggering amount of plastic bags we use each second – and the inspiration behind our mission - empowering people with high-quality tools to help them become more conscious consumers.The Plastic Bag Ticker has been borrowed and shared countless times – including its appearance on the Oprah Winfrey show on Earth Day 2008. No. of Plastic Bags Consumed Annually Worldwide / No. of Seconds in One Year = Running Talley of Plastic Bags Consumed

ASSUMPTIONS:

• While no one could ever know for certain the number of plastic bags consumed annually (it would be like trying to calculate the number of straws or toothpicks world-wide!) we do know 500 billion is on the low-end of annual worldwide estimates.
• In the US alone we use 100 billion annually.
