OK, I have to admit; I'm a total Eco-Geek! If something can reduce my footprint or the plastic in my life... I'm sold! But these are great and people are asking me where I got those when I shop to my farmers market and grocery! However they do shrink a little when you wash them but stretch back to there initial form pretty easily! If you are tired of those useless single use plastic produces bags this is for you! They are wonderful for produce at the grocery store, but also work well for small items when shopping elsewhere, to replace plastic bags. They wash well, but I've learned not to put in the dryer. The mesh bags were perfect for fruit and veggies at the grocery store or farmers market. Didn't need to use those plastic bags once. Now I just wish I would have bought more than four! The only thing is, the produce inside isn't very distinguishable from the outside so checking out at the grocery takes a little longer and is a little more awkward. These are good strong bags and I use them to get veg from my allotment. I store shallots and garlic in them and later will put each squash into a bag and hang the bags in the garage (we don`t have generally have cellars in the uk)for winter storage. These are good bags but they aren't exactly what I expected. First, they are smaller than I anticipated. Sure the sizing is listed on the site but after washing they have shrunk. They do stretch a bit and hold a decent amount but reading the codes on the produce stickers through the mesh isn't possible. I thought the mesh would be a bit finer. My husband and I LOVE these bags. We bought 5 and I almost wish we bought more. They are great for buying produce and for carrying things for my daughter. This bags are not pre shrunk. The 'Medium' 12x10 bags was reduced to a 9x8 bag in the wash (1/4 warm water to mix soap, then cold). They were hung dry. The tare weight is actually .06 not .04 as listed (I prefer to have all of mine the same weight for easy checkout). In addition the tare is located on the inside of the bag. It should be on the outside. If you don't want the cashier to open the bags, look for a bag with the tare weight tag on the outside. Then peal the sticker off your item and place it on the tare tag. These bags are easy to use and do what they are supposed to do. but I disagree with the statement that they are easy to see through. Almost every time I use them, the person at the checkout has to open the bag (loosen the drawstring)to see the sticker on the produce, or I have to tell them what's in there or how many. I reviewed these shortly after buying them in June 2008. They have been through many washings and are still going strong. I have learned I can wash these along with my dish towels on a normal setting in warm water. I line dry them though. They do add tare weight to your purchase but many store are giving credit for using your own bags, both large and small. I recommend these highly and would buy them again without a second thought. We've been getting really good at eliminating shopping bags, but were still bringing home lots of produce bags. These bags have really helped us start cutting into that problem. They are very sturdy. We bought small and large ones and have been using them for apples, oranges, grapefruit, lemons and limes, broccoli, and carrots. This is the second time I ordered bags and I love the fact they are made with organic cotton -so there is no footprint there. I would like to see another size a little smaller than the small one already provided. It is very useful- and this should be mentioned on the site- that the weight of the bag is sewn into the bag so the cashier can subtract that from the weight of the fruit or vegie. i bought 3 small and 3 large, but i think i would've been better off just getting all small ones since the large ones are hardly any bigger. i can fit about 6 bell peppers into a small bag and they're great for all other produce like tomatoes, lettuce, or cilantro/herbs. the large bags are still a bit short for corn on the cob and they get snagged due to the net design so i end up just putting them in the shopping cart w/ out a bag since i leave the husks on and then putting them in my reusable grocery bag at check out. i thought the net design would make it easier for the cashiers to see what the produce is, but they always open the bags to get a better view of the produce anyway. this is not a problem since it only takes a second to open up the draw string top. keep in mind that they are heavier than regular plastic bags, but it's better than using all those plastic bags. my local henry's market gives a 5 cents credit per bag for using your own. At first I was skeptical that it would be difficult to read the numbers on produce through these bags, but there was no need to be concerned. They are so much easier to handle than those darn plastic produce bags that always stick and are hard to open. The drawstring makes it easy to just pull it shut, and you don't have to worry about squeezing out all the air that gets trapped in plastic bags. So far I have not used these bags for anything really drippy or freshly washed, since the bags would get wet - wet stuff I just put in the cart. But I buy lots of apples, and these bags are perfect for them. I haven't had to wash them yet, but they seem very well-made and would likely hold up well to washing if it were necessary. These bags make it very easy to eliminate many of the plastic produce/bulk foods bags I used to get at the store. The mesh is too big to use for everything -- sunflower seeds, for example, would fall right through -- but they are great for larger items like vegetables, herbs, and greens. I like the mesh because I can see the contents. The bags launder well, but remember to line-dry them and do not put them in the dryer. Because these produce bags weigh a bit themselves, they are not ideal for very light bulk items, but they are great for the heavier fruits and veggies, especially potatoes and oranges. The quality is very good and I feel GREAT about drastically reducing the number of plastic bags my household uses. Just last week, I put almost 8 pounds of sweet potatoes in one of them without a problem - those crappy little plastic bags at the supermarket can't do that. The only downside is that the checkers at the market can't see the produce codes through the mesh as easily as I thought they'd be able to. I don't know of a way you could possible improve the product I purchased. I had a dilema with potatoes, when you purchase them in the store, they are in a plastic bag, which retains moisture. Most of the potatoes have wet spots, and spoil quickly. To tried to resolve this problem and I would remove them from the plastic sack and place them into a basket. This helped retain the quality longer but I knew what they needed was air circulation. I found your site and purchased 4 organic cotton ones, which hold 5# nicely and have them hanging in my pantry. I have not had one spoiled potato since. They are dry and pretty as can be. Your product is so wonderful, they would make a nice practical gifts for any homemaker. Really good product. What can I say. It's handy, sturdy, & looks clean & it looks like something that will last for many years. I like the draw string. I also like that the tag has the Tare weight on it. I use it at a local health food store & of course they readily accept it. These bags are fantastic! They are sturdy, easy to use, and save so many needless plastic bags. I don't know about you, but I never reuse those darn flimsy little plastic produce bags, so I would much rather not take them off the roll at the market to begin with. I am also trying to maximize the organic in my life and minimize the plastic, so these are just perfect for me. It is convenient that the bag weight (tare weight) is printed inside on a tag. Also of benefit is that produce is less likely to mold in this breathable bag than a closed plastic bag. Only negative point I can think of is that it is hard to see through the bag to know what's in it, so you always have to open it up. By nicole s

Felt guilty using all those plastic bags for produce and decided to try the fabric mesh. They work great - draw string holds the bag closed. I think the bag will hold up for a long time to come. I got both sizes and they seem to do the job for all produce and fruit. I flip the tag out and stick the produce code on the label for the cashier. No clerk so far has known how to reduce the weight for the mesh bag, but I just remind them to give the .05 cents for each reusable bag. By Brie N

The produce bags are great. It always seemed stupid to me to bring my own bags to the store then fill a bunch of plastic bags with produce. They are also useful for wrapping wine bottles to keep them from clanking together. Every time I use them someone asks me where I got them from, and I tell them! If I could suggest one improvement, making them a little lighter would be good, if possible, because when I tell store clerks the tare weight they look at me like I I'm crazy. These are well worth the investment. They are very sturdy, the cashiers do well enough with seeing through them to get the produce code (though it depends on the cashier!), which was my biggest worry, and why I got the netting rather than solid. The size is my only semi-complaint. While the big bags are large enough to accommodate most produce, they could still be a bit larger (for larger/longer items like celery stalks and broccoli). It still works well enough, and I wouldn't let that stop you from getting them -- big items like celery/broccoli will just stick out a little bit at the top. I put all the produce bags into one of the large ones along with my Acme workhorse resuable bags(bought on this site too!) so I have only one thing to grab when I go shopping. I receive a lot of looks and positive comments at the store. I'm not worried about any extra charge for the weight of the bags- there is a number on the tags if you want to have the checker adjust. Great sacks--however, I wish they were even bigger! I purchased the large size, but for long greens and bulky vegetables like broccoli, an even larger size would be helpful. They wash up fine in the washing machine (but make sure you line dry them or they'll shrink!) Also, maybe everyone already knew this, but I made the mistake of storing my veggies in these sacks in the refrigerator--they retained moisture and made my veggies soft and rubbery. From then on I unpacked the veggies and just stored them in my crisper drawers--problem solved. They do add weight at the grocery store check-out, but at Whole Foods the cashier will pre-weigh and empty bag and then subtract that amount for all your vegetables. Overall, I would recommend these bags--I feel good about using less plastic every week. By perla t

I've not had any trouble with check-out, though baggers tend to not put this in another bag (and I bring plenty!) even though this doesn't have (and shouldn't have) handles. I think these bags are pretty great. To make the checkout process easier, I weighed my fruit and printed out a bar code sticker, like I would if I was doing self-checkout, and then I stuck it to the mesh bag so the cashier could easily scan it. The cashier acted like he didn't know what to do and ended up looking inside the bag anyway. The mesh does make it somewhat difficult to read the sticker codes on the fruit, but that is another reason I made my own bar code. This is actually a good product, but I think it is going to require more cashier training! By john p

These are a must! I need more in fact. We purchased 4 of them (with the holes) and use them all the time! Including keeping the fruit/veges in them in the frig. I truly think they are keeping our produce fresh longer! The see through (holes) are a must, because the clerk has an easier time seeing what is in the bag and has never had to take out the items to see, then scan as with the other bags. I live in a place where you most people aren't aware of new products to cut down the use of plastic materials, so when I took these to the chain grocery store in my neighborhood they were a little confused. The bag is a really great idea because I never end up reusing the small bags and had accumulated a very large stash. The only problem I have with it is the visibility of the contents. The bag is marketed so that cashiers can see the items in the bags, however the netting isn't quite big enough. I've been using this produce bag since the end of December and I love it. Sometimes it's a little inconvenient for the cashiers to have to figure out what is inside, but for the most part, they know that oranges are oranges and have the produce code memorized. If they aren't sure what is in it, they ask or undo the slip knot that I tie in the top for easy access. Cashiers have had very positive feedback on the bag, saying that it was very "neat" or "a great idea" and no one has ever complained. I would highly recommend these to anyone. By Darin T

Love my new produce bags. I was a shopper who spent way too much time trying to open those flimsy plastic bags on the roll in the produce department. Now, in addition to helping our planet, I no longer have to struggle (and sometimes ask for help!) with the plastic bags. Have been using them for about 2 weeks now. Some of the tags/barcodes on your produce will still not be visible through the mesh, but its not a big deal to expose enough of the item to make it visible. The produce sacks are terrific It seemed so wrong to me when I was putting organic produce in a plastic bag! I purchased the large bags and found them to be so easy to use and they hold a large amount of produce. The draw string closes neat and quick and you don't have to worry about the produce coming out of the bag--and no twist ties needed! Wonderful! Easy for the check out person to view what type of produce you are buying. I am going to buy more and this time get some of the smaller bags. My husband is reluctant to use them because he feels they add more weight on the grocery scale. He tries to sneak plastic bagged items into the cart. Unfortunately, the bags are smaller than quoted, the large size being 3" shorter on the length alone, which means it doesn't fit everything I need to put inside. I haven't tried washing them yet, so I'm not sure if shrinkage will be an issue. They aren't all that see through, but it's no big deal. The store that I buy produce from in the winter was able to calibrate the scale, so the slight increase in weight over the plastic produce bags in the grocery store, was not an issue. I can put several pounds of apples into one and it holds up well. Have caution when washing though they do tend to shrink quite a bit. They are easily washable (hang dry) and hold lots of produce, e.g., 8 apples, 6 crowns of broccoli, etc. The checker found it helpful to have the holes in the bags so she could see the produce number during checkout. My only complaint is about storage. I have Envirosax grocery bags that have 5 bags which roll, snap and store in a 6 x 4 pouch. At Whole Foods they'll take off the tare weight, so I don't have to pay extra for the extra weight, which is a relief. I feel so good about using these, and I hope others will see and follow my lead. Loved them! Purchasing more for "stocking stuffers" for the family. Three things: 1) Size - I actually think the large are not large enough. Maybe call those a "Medium" and add one more size. 2) Confusion in the check out lines. Is there a way to imprint "produce bag" on the outside? (Organic ink or an organic cotton tag or??) 3) Weight - it does add a little. It would be nice to get some grocery stores to offer discounts for those that use their own bags. We're so happy to have a replacement for plastic produce bags! These are working pretty well, but there were a couple things we were surprised by: * The instructions say to wash the bags in cold water and to line-dry. We did. They still shrunk considerably. So if you're deciding between the small and large size, err on the large side. * They aren't as "see-through" as we expected. So the cashier at the grocery store sometimes has to ask us what the items inside are. It only happens maybe once every other time we go to the grocery store, so it's not a big problem. I, and the restaurants with which I deal are very, very happy with the organic cotton bags I found at reusablebags.com. One thing I would mention though. I find it deplorable that a company claiming to make an effort to change the waste stream, would send unrequested bumpersticker with an order. These are excellent produce bags. I am finally to the point where I remember my ACME totes almost every time, and I was feeling guilty about using plastic produce bags. These are large--fits bunches of kales, several bunches of broccoli, any amount of fruit, etc. I have some of the non-mesh, which I think I will now use for bulk bin items. I wish they were a little bit cheaper per bag considering that you definitely need to buy a good amount if you buy a lot of produce, but I use them all the time now. The larger ones are great for grapefruits, oranges, apples, and bananas while the small one are great for onions, plums, tangerines, tomatoes. I have four of each and just throw them in my reusable shopping bags in my cart and use them as I need them. Machine washable so easy to clean. The only problem is remembering to use them for my produce when near a plastic bag dispenser as I break my plastic bag habit. :-) Would definitely buy again. By MJ M

I purchased the organic cotton net produce sacks to hang in my basement stairwell for produce storage. They are awesome! All the items (onions, potatoes, shallots, garlic) have been keeping quite well - and the look? Fantastic! I'm seriously considering buying some more to take along on my shopping trips. I am so very happy with the reuseable produce bags I purchased! I drive my hydrid to the nearest local place selling locally grown organic produce, take my own bags, and fill 'em up! They hold a lot, even the small ones, and I'm very happy not to be taking home more plastic! I also keep some reuseable containers in the car for the times we eat at restaurants and have leftovers. I don't accept the restaurant's styrofoam - I've got my own containers! MUCH better in every way! It's a matter of .. thinking about what I'm doing... and making sure my supplies are in the car when I need 'em. Thank you for your great products! Lin By Ciry N

Love these bags. Great design. I use these ones (with the open material) to pack the produce for checkout at the store. Then I keep my "not washed" produce inside them in the fridge. I also purchased the other style of produce bags (the closely knitted material) for storing my washed produce in the fridge and for keeping my potatoes, onions, sweet potatoes and bulk beans in the pantry. I get so much use of both styles that I need to buy more of them, since I seem to keep all of them full when I need an empty one. By Jessie V

I was disappointed in the produce sacks. They're too heavy for the veggies plus you can't readily see what's in them w/o opening the sack. I was anxious to try out my produce bags as I feel we all use way too many plastic bags in the produce dept. These Eco Bags, however, are not the answer - at least for me. The material is too 'thick' making it difficult for harried cashiers to see what's in the bag very well; it also cost me 7 cents more for my zucchini (we weighed zucchini in and out of the bag). Had I bought a more costly item, such as peaches for example, the additional cost of the bag would have been even higher.I just think there must be something else out there that is a lighter-weight mesh fabric. Something on the order of the net bags around avocados for example. To get a large number of people interested in using produce bags instead of plastic, you need to find bags that cost a heck of a lot less than $3.95 and that are light enough not to add more cost to food items. People will use any negative to deter them from making a change from easier shopping habits. Adding additional costs to food is never a good idea. It took me a while to start using the bags. Part of the problem was remembering to take them in the store with me, the other part was wondering what the reaction would be when i asked them to use my bags instead of the plastic. I was pleasantly surprised at the willingness to accommodate my request, plus they gave me a nickle credit for each bag I provided. I now take them in with me always, and am pleased with the capacity of the bags, plus ease of handling. I am totally sold on the concept. Now I need to get some refrigerator bags for my veggies. I'm new at using cloth bags for my groceries, and I've just started using the cloth string grocery bags at my local Vons store. I love using my string bags, but I'm having trouble getting myself to use these cotton net produce sacks for my produce. The main reason is that I weighed one (the large size) at about 2.5 ounces on the grocery store's produce scales. Today I bought some apples at $1.99 a pound. I calculated that if I used my cloth bag assuming a weight of 2.5 ounces, it would add another 31 cents to the cost of the apples. In contrast, the plastic bag weighed nothing according the scale. Maybe I'm cheap, but I don't want to needlessly pay an extra 31 cents per bag for the priviledge of using cloth produce bags. I need to talk to the cashier to see if she can subtract the weight of the bag from the total weight, but they all seem so busy that I haven't done this yet. I have the same complaint with the large produce bags: they weigh about 2 ounces (the website says 0.09 lbs). By Victoria M

I purhcased the Gecko Traders Recycled Wave Tote and I love them! We have a family of 5 so each week I go to the grocery store at least twice and our order fits into between 3 and 5 of these bags -- they are so roomy and unbelievabley strong. I especially like the outside pockets which are large and tough enough to hold a bottle of wine. Also the material is water resistant so spills or rain just wipe off. Good sturdy reuseable bags that replace the single use plastic produce bags. I've had favorable comments from the cashiers at the grocery store. The only drawback to these bags is their lack of transparency. If the produce inside has to be counted, or the produce has an ID sticker on it, then the cashier has to open the bag to look in.
