Instead of making a Starbuck’s run or stocking up on Pumpkin Spice K-Cups, try this delectable Pumpkin Spice Latte recipe at home. You’ll save at least $4 + gas money, and avoid generating waste from paper to-go cups, cardboard sleeves, plastic stirrers and ultra-wasteful K-Cups. Plus, you can make the milk/pumpkin mixture ahead of time, pop it in the fridge in a reusable container and have it on hand for a quick latte in the morning! It’s easy to fall in love with the Pumpkin Spice Latte’s spicy aroma, frothy texture and pumpkin pie taste, but the waste (and money!) involved can be overwhelming, especially if you tend to indulge on a daily or weekly basis.
How to Make a Pumpkin Spice Latte at Home: (Yields two 10 oz. Pumpkin Spice Lattes)
Ingredients: • 2 cups milk (any variety or % you like. Substitute almond or soy milk, if desired. I used whole milk for a richer, creamier texture) • 6 tablespoons canned pumpkin purée • 3 tablespoons white sugar • 2 tablespoons vanilla extract • ½ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves • ½ cup strong coffee or espresso (or more) • canned whipped cream (optional) • cinnamon for garnish (optional)
Directions: 1) Brew at least half a cup of coffee or more. (I chose a strong, dark roast, ground the beans at home and then brewed them in a French Press. I highly recommend a French Press to those who’ve never used one; the only waste involved is the leftover coffee grounds—which can be composted—and produces an absolutely delicious cup every time).
2) Add the milk, pumpkin purée, sugar, vanilla, pumpkin pie spice and cloves to a small saucepan over medium to high heat. Bring almost to a boil, whisking constantly until it starts to froth (about 1 minute).
3) Add coffee to saucepan and stir. Then divide the mixture between two tall mugs. Add whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon, if desired.
4) Enjoy your delicious, inexpensive and waste-free homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte! We do recommend sipping your Pumpkin Spice Latte from one of our coffee and tea reusables. Our 4 favorites?
