Wednesday, August 10. 2011Staff Pick: Innate MC Snap Food Container + A Giveaway-Natalie, PR & Community Manager
I decided to give the Innate’s MC Snap a trial run before school starts to see how my son liked it. I like that it’s all unpainted stainless steel so I don’t have to worry about it getting chipped or scratched and it’s free of BPA, phthalates and lead. It’s also dishwasher safe – a major bonus in my book – and it features a gasket to keep the food inside fresh. Teno had no troubles opening and closing the spring snaps on the side and there was plenty of room for his pb & j along with a few pieces of fruit or cut veggies inside. It’s nice and slim, so it will fit nicely in his new lunch bag along with an ice pack, reusable snack bag and a water bottle.I'm also looking forward to using the MC Snap to pack healthy snacks for when we go camping. The MC Snap definitely gets my personal seal of approval along with that of reuseit.com. I like it so much, in fact, I’d like to give a few away to our readers.
1. Use the share button on the product page to share the Innate MC Snap with your friends & family
For more info about waste-free lunches check out our 5-step how-to! Good luck, everyone! The contest is over - thanks to everyone who entered! Thursday, August 4. 2011Help Us Donate Lunch Gear to Those in Need
Last year, as many of us in the office were signing our kids up for their first year of school, we noticed that our school supply lists included optional donations of items like back packs, lunch bags and water bottles for children in need.
We encourage our customers to also consider purchasing an extra lunch bag, reusable water bottle or other back-to-school essential for a child in need. Additionally, for the second year in a row, we're donating $500 worth of lunch gear to a school chosen by you! To nominate a school, leave a comment on this blog post, or visit our Facebook page and tell us about a school that could benefit from a $500 lunch gear donation. (Be sure that we can contact you via email from your comment or Facebook post in case your nominated school wins!) We'll consider your suggestions and choose a winning school or class at the end of August. Giving back is part of what we do - to date, we've donated over $200,000 to like-minded non-profits. Click here to read about our donation to last year's winner. Looking for more information on waste-free lunches and how to help your school go green? Check out these resources:

Friday, May 27. 2011DIY Project: Customize your reusables in 3 easy stepsWe recently heard from a customer looking to spruce up our Everything Cloth to pack in her child's waste-free lunch. The hemp & organic cotton cloths themselves are the perfect replacement for paper napkins, facial tissue, paper towels, wet naps and more - and because they're made from high-quality natural fibers they're perfect for DIY projects like embroidery, fabric painting, or, as we'll show you here - iron-on transfers. Check out out Community Manager Natalie's instructions for quick and easy customized napkins:
- transfer paper for an Inkjet printer (found online or at your local craft store) - artwork to transfer - a printer - an iron Instructions: 1. Choose your artwork. Let your child use a drawing application on your computer to create custom art, or find free clip art online. You can also purchase fun artwork on Etsy, as I did for the veggie transfers pictured at the end of this post. My son is obsessed with Super Mario Bros. so I found some free clip art online and saved it on my desktop for his napkins. 2. Print your transfer. Once you've saved your artwork, pull it together onto one document in a program like Photoshop or Illustrator. Microsoft Word will even work in a pinch. Resize the artwork however you wish (I put four images on each of my son's napkins, and two images on each of my veggie napkins.) You'll need to reverse the image before you can print it, because it will transfer backwards. You can either flip individual images in the application you're using, or you might be able to flip your entire document in your printer settings. Follow the instructions on the transfer paper package for using the paper with your printer. 3. Iron your transfer on. When your transfer sheet has printed, cut the Peel the paper back slowly - if the image doesn't look like it's transferring, carefully replace the paper and iron for a few more seconds. Tips: - Custom napkins make great gifts - adorn them with your friend's favorite song lyrics, initials, images of their favorite vacation spot... anything that makes it personal and special.- Google image search allows you to easily find free clip art online. - If you plan on transferring images onto darker colors, use transfer paper for dark fabrics to avoid a white ring around your images. - This method works for lots of items - try customizing your lunch bag or reusable tote! Do you have a great DIY project that makes reusables even more fun? Send it to us at service@reuseit.com!
Friday, May 20. 2011Fiesta Fare Waste-free LunchRecently we asked our Facebook fans to send us their favorite ideas for healthy, flavorful, waste-free lunches. The responses were too good not to share! Here's a fun, festive lunch idea from Lorelei Boller-Tian. Check our more of her recipes at Bitten and Written, and our 5 Steps to a Waste-free Lunch here.
This delicious Mexican-inspired meal makes fantastic use of the Bento Box Set with Carrying Case 2.0 by Laptop Lunches. This wonderful all-in-one kit includes everything needed to pack a waste-free lunch. The separate compartments provide endless possibilities for parents and kids to put together healthy and creative combinations. For this meal, I’ve included a flavorful black bean and corn salad that really packs a nutritional punch. Chock full of protein, fiber, and vitamins A and C, this salad is fun for kids to scoop up with their favorite tortilla chips. Juicy pineapple and mango with fresh mint add an appealing splash of color. For dessert, try this simplified version of arroz con leche, a traditional Spanish/Latin American treat. Just top store-bought rice pudding with a sprinkle of cinnamon, golden raisins, and roasted pepitas. (Pepitas should be added just before eating to keep then nice and crunchy. The tiny sauce container included in this Laptop Lunch set works perfectly for this.)

Tuesday, March 2. 2010Top Tips for Waste-free Take Out
Despite our best efforts to pack healthy lunches every day, we do know a thing or two about take out. Our office is located smack in the middle of downtown Chicago, surrounded by hundreds of places to get lunch to go. Rick Bayless has three restaurants right across the street! How could we resist?
Just like in our Starbucks Survival Kit post, we've found ways to make our weekly Thai to-go a waste-free indulgence, so here are our tips for a eco-friendly lunch on the run. 1. Figure out which take out joints near you are willing to cater to your waste-free requests and frequent them! If the sandwich shop in your building refuses to pack your snack the way you want it, march over to the one down the street that will. Of course, there might be some basic food safety issues that prevent certain restaurants from accepting a customer's containers so pick up the phone and ask, "If I give you guys a container can you pack my food in it?" If they say yes, go there! 2. If your favorite cafe gives you a disposable, ask them if you can reuse it on your next visit. We've actually seen some yogurt stands offer incentives to bring your clean container back for reuse. It's worth asking! (See the video below for more great ways to reuse disposable take out containers.) 3. Say no to plastic utensils and paper napkins. When you place your order, let them know you don't need a fork or napkins. If your office kitchen is well-stocked you might not need ketchup, soy sauce or salt packets either. You can keep reusable napkins, utensils and even straws in your bag or at your desk so you never need disposables. 4. BYO...bag. Your favorite lunch spot might not be BYOB, but it'll certainly allow you to bring your own bag. Keep an ACME Workhorse in your purse or pocket and carry your food away with the confidence that you've spared the planet one more plastic bag. Or, have your lunch packed in a tiffin box with a handle and skip the bag altogether. 5. Bring your own cup or mug! Whether you get a soda or a hot drink with your meal, there's no reason not to bring your own beverage container to cut back on plastic bottles, paper and Styrofoam cups and all those plastic lids and straws. A lot of cafes will even knock a few cents off your total for not taking a disposable cup. 6. Make it a sustainable sammich. You want to cut back on waste, but you won't want to haul a bulky container all the way back to work when you grab a sandwich. Take a reusable sandwich bag with you! Once they get to know you, the sandwich makers won't think twice about it and it's a guaranteed way to get other people in line talking about ways to create less waste. Also, check out this awesome video from Grist about reducing your "carbon forkprint." There are lots of great tips - and you can find all the smart products in the video on our site, along with tons of other reusables for every part of your life. So what are some of your favorite ways to "take out" without all the "throw out"?
