4.0 Cute but problems with stains

I own several of these and echo what others have said about all the great features -- love the colorful designs, you can fit a lot in them, they roll up easily to store, you can wash and drip dry, etc. However, I have issues with black stains (that look like mold or mildew) in the bottoms of the bags. I believe this is an issue related to my daughters leaving the ice packs inside the bags, inside their backpacks and forgetting to take them out sometimes. I have washed them, soaked them in color safe bleach, spot-treated them, etc. These stains do not go away. It looks disgusting.The bags are clean but stained. Any ideas on how to get rid of the stains? Given their overall usefulness and the cost of replacing, I am reluctant to just get rid of them altogether. By Janine R

Easy to use, lots of room for your average lunch, stretches to accomodate different sized containers. Room enough to put a sandwich, a water bottle, and various other sides, with no problem. Washes like a dream, doesn't fade. Just hang it to dry and it's good to go. I'm sort of a clean freak with food, so it's washed constantly.I never found it to be a problem to keep things cold if you have a frozen cold pack inside that is big enough to do the job. You could even freeze a water bottle, set your sandwich on top and it should be fine.
I have them for both of my kids and they survived a school year and still look new. Bonus points for it's ability to collapse and fit flat inside an overstuffed backpack when lunch is over.
My only gripe is that they come in only girly colors. My son said just this morning 'please don't make me carry THAT one' when he looked at the polka dots (he lost his green one that isn't produced anymore). So I'm back here to buy his only option: black. Can we have some plain colors or cammo? No 11 year old boy is going to carry anything of the other ones, and neither is my husband.

They have had the same ones for the last two school years, and I am only just now thinking I might need to replace them. The ONLY complaint I have is.... This is my second Built lunch bag and I love it just as much as the first one (the first one got left on a plane). The greatest feature of this lunch bag is that I can throw it in the wash. Washing the first one about every other week for a year did not make the colors fade or weaken the fabric in any way. Like Dr. Who's TARDIS, this little wonder is bigger than it looks at first sight. I have used it practically every day since I got it, bringing t to the office with 1) a container of soup, 2) my glasses, 3) a fairly thick paperback book, 4) pocket package of Kleenex and 5) my security badge tucked inside. And there is room for more. Even better, the flexible handle allows me to slip it over my wrist, so I can carry my briefcase, handbag or a grocery bag at the same time. I bought this for my daughter for her first year in school as I own one already and really like it.The fabric is soft and moldable so it fits a lot of stuff in it - at least 3 containers, a Thermos Foogo and an apple. It's easy to clean, easy to open and great to hold.

I got this bag to replace a small cooler type bag I had. This bad is more flexible, is stylish, and holds A LOT of food. The only issue is that it doesn't stay as cool as I would like, even with ice packs and sitting in the fridge all night. I use this lunch tote for my 4.5 year-old daughter's lunch at pre-school. It is the BEST lunch tote I have ever purchased and would highly recommend this to any mom. Not only is it insulated and well made, but it also easily STRETCHES when you need to fit an odd-shaped container in it. It wipes/cleans easily and my daughter loves the handle at the top for easy carrying. She is so proud of her lunchbox that she will not allow me to carry it. I am also very glad that I purchased this in the large size for her, as it is perfect. I initially thought it would be too big but it really is not bulky for her, is easy to carry (doesn't touch the ground when she carries it) and holds a typical container or two, utensils and thermos. I purchased this item because of all the wonderful reviews. The bag clains to be insulated and the reviewers said it kept their lunch cold. Well I don't know where they work, but I work in an air conditioned office and it couldn't even keep my lunch cold for 4 hours. It keeps it cold for about 2 hours. This is a good paper bag replacement, but not good for keeping your lunch cold. My only bummer is that I tossed the recipit and tags and can't return it. This is not a bag for keeping your lunch cold.The reason for the low rating is because the company claims that it is insulated and it is not. But it is cute so 1 star for that.

2.0 Not for keeping your lunch cold

I bought this bag based on the other reviews on the site, but I am really disappointed with it. The bag is cute and stretchy which is nice, but insulated it is not! Sure this is great if you plan to stick your lunch in the fridge at work, but as far as keeping things cold it doesn’t work that great. I bought one and wish I had saved my receipt to return it. I even put a freezer pack in and my lunch is not cold in the 4.5 hours it sits until I eat it. Back to the drawing board to buy a regular old insulated bag. This will be good for chips and such or maybe sodas in the summer, but that is about it. It is too bad because I really liked the color and the shape. By mia i

I bought this for my 8 month old's food for daycare and bottles after an opened container of baby food spilled all over her larger bag and paper work. I have another neoprene style bag for an older child, and this one is very roomy so that I can fit 3 small food containers and 5 smaller bottles with no problems (much roomier than the Dabba Walla one I have for my son). These wash up easily on gentle cycle with Woolite. I love that you can wash them because they do get dirty with spills and such. They do keep food cold. I bought two of these (neon green and black)around the holidays with the intention of using one for a "Yankee Swap" and the second to replace my 5-year old's lunch bag that has a torn lining and is generally pretty raggedy since starting school in September. I kept the Yankee Swap one and have used it practically every day. It is roomy enough for the Glad Ware that I use for salads, leftovers, etc. The flat bottom ensures it will stand up in the fridge. The material can stand up to the gentle wash. And it's cute! (Guys don't let that be a detterent!) It is a little large for the amount of food my daughter brings to school, but she loves the bright color and I like the quality and ability to clean it. This is the second purchase I've made of these lunch bags and they are THE BEST!!! And make sure you buy the Large Size. I used to buy the regular insulated lunch bags but wiping them out was never enough and throwing them in the wash would just destroy them. So when I found these neoprene/wet suit lunch boxes on Reusable Bags.com, I gave them a try, even though they were a little pricier than the other ones. Well, they ended up saving me alot of money in the long run because they lasted two school years for our 3 kids. And, I could probably get them to go one more year! I had to sew up a few holes from time to time, but that's ok. I love the new garden pattern. The patterned ones (dots, etc.) seem to wear a little better than the solid colored ones. This bag doesn't keep things cold for very long (and I use a large ice pack with it). It does smell rubber-y but I've only had it for a few days and I imagine the smell will lessen. I purchased the Built Gourmet Getaway while I was home recovering from surgery. I was hoping it would arrive before my first day back to work but it came the next day. The bag is the right size to hold my lunch items and expands to hold any other extras I might be taking with me that day. When I empty the bag, she compresses to fit into my backpack for easy transportation both to work when she is filled and at the end of the day to come home. I was getting such use out of the Built Gourmet Getaway (Large) that I decided to purchase a second one. They are very both well made, so even after wear and tear of one year and a lot of washing, they are as good as new. The 2nd bag was just what I was looking for in dimension: It was slightly longer with larger handles than that of Gourmet Getaway. The vibrant color is alos lovely. I love the fact that this bag folds up after use for easy transport (empty) back home. Add that to the fact that the shape allows for more wide containers at the bottom and you have a perfect bag. The material is easy to clean and even with the lighter background, I don't find it getting dirty or grimy with weekday use. People also love the look of the bag and I have gotten many comments on it. The price might seem high, but it is really strong construction - the zipper is not going to tear from the seams and the stitching elsewhere is solid! Just what I envisioned and hoped for - a simple handy bag into which I can cram my multiple meals for the day... and look good carrying.... AND not allow spills in my work bag! I am absolutely delighted. The size is reasonable (i.e. doesn't look or feel too big/small), yet it accommodates all that I need. Some days I have to bring all my meals (B, L, D & snacks) with me and this fits them all. Sometimes I squeeze my 1L Sigg in with my lunch, just to cut down on loose items. I purchased this lunch bag for my 10 year old daughter, but I would use it too. It is very cute, light weight, yet very sturdy. I have no doubt that even though we have only had the tote for about 2 months, it will last and last. The size is perfect. You can put just 1 or 2 things in and have a nice thin lunch bag, or stuff it full. It expands (stretchs) really nicely. My daughter usually takes a 12oz stainlss steel water bottle a sandwich, a stainless steel bowl(holds about 1 cup of food) with fruit or yogurt in it (sometimes 2 bowls)a napkin,spoon and an ice pack that is about 6 inches by 3 inches. The bag still has room to hold more, and the zipper never seems compromised. the bag does have a "purse" look to it (shape of it) so I wouldn't recomend it for boys. By Carol G

I got Built's Gourmet Getaway Insulated Tote Bag to use in conjunction with ToGo Ware's 2-Tier SS Food Carrier to carry small meals, to-go orders and restaurant leftovers around with more style, safety and security. Excellent choice! I really like this tote's sophisticated yet very practical design (love the handles), stretchy Neoprene fabric and insulation, and sturdy construction. The food carrier fits inside snuggly -- its flat bottom keeps the tote from falling over on flat surfaces -- and the industrial-strength zipper keeps everything inside protected (think food safety) and away from the elements. I love love love this lunch bag! It can hold a lot without being large and bulky, and is very sturdy. I generally only take my lunch in, but if running late I would have plenty of room for breakfast as well. Because I usually transfer my lunch to the refrigerator when I get to work, I cannot attest to how well insulated it is, however I have friends with similar lunch bags who carry them around all day and enjoy a cool lunch. These are the best lunchbags EVER. I have had one for over a year, and it still looks brand-new. Just purchased one for my boyfriend, and he really likes it, too. These bags are so sturdy, wash up beautifully, stretch around large containers, (sometimes I have to pack two meals, and these bags have enough room!), and have a little cushion just in case the bag is dropped, too. I bought this lunch tote as a Christmas gift for my husband. We have been packing our lunches for work for years and I use a cloth lunch tote. My husband is not the type of guy to carry a "cute" lunchbox. He was using plastic shopping bags and then throwing them away when he was done eating. I decided it was time to invite him over the plastic-free side of lunch. This is by far the best lunch bag I have ever purchased. I am like a Built NY evangelist now. I bought it last year for my elementary school daughter who takes her lunch everyday. I do insert a blue ice pack because she often has milk or yogurt. It keeps everything in the bag cooled until her lunch and after. I wrap the blue ice in a washcloth to contain any moisture, this came in handy when she forgot to close her canteen and milk leaked inside. Amazingly the bag was only damp and did not leak- the cloth did help. The absolute best feature of the bag is the fact that you can throw it in the washing machine. I was tired of wasting money on the traditional lunch bags- they get absolutely filthy inside and out. I also think these Built bags are indestructible, it has lasted through 2nd grade, summer use and now the beginning of 3rd- it has been burned on a stove, dragged along concrete and run over by a car (well, not that last one, but I'm sure it would survive even that!) I also bought a Klean Kanteen with a Built NY cover, it is the second greatest purchase made for lunch purposes! I highly recommend both products. I also love that it is squishy, so I am able to bring my leftovers in glass storage containers (with all of the concern over plastics these days, I'm feeling less comfortable about storing food in plastic) without worrying about them breaking from an accidental donk. (And, the bonus of bringing leftovers in a glass dish is being able to microwave them right in the dish, without having to dirty another plate! I never microwave in plastic...). I have the French Bull style which is the more attractive of the styles offered (in my personal opinion). I don't care for dots or stripes. I have everything good to say about this bag. I can fit my sandwich container and a snack container, my cloth napkin, and my water bottle. It is a tight fit with the water bottle, but the bag seems to expand to contain it all. I purchased two of the large Built lunch bags for my kids (4 & 7). The plastic lining of the regular kid lunch bags they have out shredded before teh school year was out (A thermos brand did better, but still the lining was tearing). THis made cleaning them harder since water would get in between the lining and the "insulation". I felt I'd wasted about $30 on these lunch bags that wouldn't make it through another school year. This is why I checked out the Built bags. While more expensive than the cheap-o bags you can get for kids at Target, I think these will last much longer. THey also stretch to allow for odd shaped containers. I put one ice pack at the bottom of the bag in the morning (8am) & the pack, while not rock hard, is still cold (6pm). Impressive. I went with solid colors because they were less expensive. The zipper seems very sturdy as does the stitching. I'm hoping these bags will last much longer & I won't be putting them in a landfill in a year! I recommend them! My only complaint is the color matching of the Red version-- it's green inside. Blech! Couldn't htey have picked another color? To me Red & Green = Christmas & so not what I'd want in a lunchbag. Outside of the bad color pairing, LOVE these bags! :) By Beth W

I'm a college student and at school about 9-10 hours a day. Don't let the size deceive you; it holds a midi size Sigg container, small container for fruit, small bag of chips, small yogurt cup, and a juicebox or juice pouch... all at once. I'd say it can probably even hold two of the midi Sigg boxes easily. It's extremely well insulated, my food stays cool all day. I also love that it's leakproof! To the top of the handle, is 12 inches, htere is only 8 inches of usable space. I use this bag for the To-Go-Wear stainless steel food carrier. The bag is really user friendly. With the TGW inside, I can also fit a sandwich wrap with bread, and a napkin, and my Sigg stainless steel cutlery, with a little room to spare. Add a thermos to your overall backpack, and you could haul a lot of food. This would be a GREAT bag for kids, in my opinion, because the zipper is so nice, and the flexible bag is forgiving in terms of packing sloppily. It's also ridiculously easy to wash. The zipper is tough and glides well. It also looks sleek and cool, unlike the canvas lunch bag I had as a kid (but was still proud of). The black looks very professional for the office too. The thick fabric gives your lunch a little protection as well. The design of the bag also allows for it to stand up while loading and while on your desk- which is nice, you don't have to lay it down. The bag is great! It holds much more than it looks and then stretches some. The softness of the neoprene is great also because I tend to carry my toddler's lunch in glass jars, so the bumps are less likely to break things. Although I haven't really tested it yet, the cold food appears to be fairly cold when I open it a few hours later. The only down side is that when first used, the neoprene had a nasty chemical smell. This lunch bag worked great...until I decided to wash it. Although I followed the manufacturer's instructions for laundering, the bag came unstitched in the washing machine. When I contacted the manufacturer regarding this issue, I was told that it was a "design malfunction" that should be addressed through reusablebags.com. I think that it is very poor customer service to expect retailers to be responsible for product defects and will not be purchasing Build NY products in the future. I decided to buy this bag after 10+ years of using my old lunch bag, which was tattered and worn. I was looking for something that looked nice as well as something large enough to carry my many (small) tupperware containers. This bag fit the bill! It is large enough for the containers and looks great. My co-worker commented that she would not have guessed it was a lunch bag. Besides the look, the thing I like most about this bag is it's flexibility. My old bag was rectangular shaped, so if you couldn't fit your containers in it, too bad; they didn't fit. This one stretches a bit so that you can fit several odd-shaped containers into it without any problem. The zipper is sturdy and keeps everything inside. I'm very happy with this lunch bag! I feel like the money I have saved by bringing vs. buying lunch has paid for the bag many times over. It fits my breakfast, lunch, and snacks. It's easy to fill because the bottom flattens out when you open it and you can roll it up or smoosh it when empty. I have always admired Built NY's quality and this bag is no exception. The little plastic zipper handle did break from pulling on it too hard, but i blame myself rather than the bag - i pulled on it pretty hard. "Good" doesn't even come close to the review of this bag!! I purchased several of these bags as gifts and I actually had one left over from Christmas. I started using it when I started on the South Beach Diet. I love it! It's roomy interior allows me to fit my lunch, two snacks, and my V8 inside! It holds much more than the medium lunch tote, which I purchased previously. I had a difficult time fitting multiple reusable containers in the medium size bag, however I can fit everything I need (salad container, fruit container, yogurt, and more) for the day's lunch and some snacks in this large bag. I use this bag every day and would definitely recommend it. Not only does she think it's fashionably cool, it falls within the "no characters" lunchbox rule at her Montessori school and provides a great safe alternative to vinyl/leaded lunchboxes. We've been through many lunch boxes between my 2 kids, including the Fleurville packs (which didn't pack as much and split seams), and this BUILT NY bag is by far the best I've tried. Wow!! I have been looking for a lunch bag for a few years, and just never found one that suited my needs, until now! I almost didn't get this bag because of the price, but I decided to take a chance. The top zips closed (which I don't recall being mentioned in the product description) and inside there is a small pocket suitable for packets of seasoning & silverware. There is also a gusset that runs along the bottom, so when the bag is full it sits upright with a flat bottom. This bag met my needs as being large enough to hold anything I would want to take with me for the day for food. It can hold 3 bottles of water and still have room for a snack, or it can hold a full lunch (including drink) & snack with all items in tupperware-style containers. Another great thing about the bag is that you can slip your arm thru the handle to carry and it is incredibly soft & stretchy (i.e. easy to carry if you have an armload of other stuff). I only wish it had come in a wider variety of colors. So, if you are hesitating, get the bag, you won't be disappointed! By Heather H

I work 12 hour shifts, so I wanted something larger that your average brown bag, but with this one I still find myself throwing food into my purse or bringing a plastic bag b/c I just can't fit enough food for 2 meals. Also I found that it doesn't insulate very well. I put a large ice pack in (further diminishing it's storage capacity) and it melts and still doesn't keep my food cold. My jello was completely liquid by the time I got to it. It's very cute and I like the inside pocket but it's doesn't insulate at all and I personally needed something bigger. Oh well... Actually, I am (still) amazed that it fits all the meals I take to work; which is about three sandwiches and grapes or two sandwiches and a small tupperware container. I intended to use this bag for trips to the park for snacks and sippy cups but when, after a few days, I hadn't needed an insulated bag I ended up putting my keys, wallet and cell phone in it and it has now served as my purse since! Now when I've needed an insulated bag I jut shove the snacks in too since the bag expands like crazy. The zipper is awesome and I love that I feel my things inside are secure. It is so comfortable to hold and I can't tell you how many people have acutally STOPPED me on the street or in the mall to find out where I got my great "purse".
