" Recommended as an Eco-Friendly Choice" - Grist, November 2008

" How to Have Happier Periods" - BUST Magazine, October 2008

When we heard about Lunapads, we were intrigued and concerned about making such a big lifestyle change. Disposable tampons and pads contribute tremendous waste to our environment, but the idea of reusable menstrual products seemed impractical. Fortunately, seeing how attractive and well-made Lunapads were won us over.

These innovative Pads are top-of-line, in terms of both quality and convenience. Made from the softest, most absorbent organic cotton, with a protective nylon lining, Lunapads offer a simple way to make the switch to reusable pads and pantyliners. Like practicing recycling or remembering to bring your own shopping bags to the market with you, washing Lunapads is admittedly a little more work than just throwing away used pads and tampons.

Even if you' re not ready for a complete change, adding one Lunapad to your monthly routine can be a step in the right direction.

Design & Functionality
Lunapads unique design — a pad with a removable liner on top — allows you to customize the protection you need and easily freshen throughout the day. The pad wraps around your underwear and fastens with a small plastic snap. All Lunapads Pad styles feature a thin layer of breathable nylon to help prevent soaking through. Liners are made of 2 layers of highly absorbent fleece, placed on top of the pad and secured with ric-rac bands.

Like disposable pads, you should start each day with a fresh Lunapad Pad, then change Liners as often as needed. On heavier days, you may want to change the entire Pad at some point — on light ones probably not at all. With experience, you will learn which pad style and how many liners will take you through a day.

Lunapads Pantyliners are designed for ultra-light protection for daily discharge, very light menstrual flow, or as backup protection for other feminine hygiene products, such as the DivaCup. Unlike Lunapads Pads, Pantyliners do not have an extra layer of nylon lining and are not compatible with Lunapad Liners.

It can take anywhere from one day to several months to incorporate your new washable pads into your monthly routine. Many women start out by just using them at night, when they’re at home, or on lighter flow days.

This kit includes reusable Pads, Liners and Pantyliners for use throughout your menstrual cycle:
  • Maxi Pad & Liner – use for average flow days. Add the Maxi Wing Liner to increase absorbency for heavy flow days.
  • Mini Pad & Liner – use for light flow days. Add the Mini Pad Liner to increase absorbency. (Note: Mini Liners are also compatible with Maxi Pads)
  • Mini Pantyliner – suitable for daily discharge, very light flow or as backup protection.
  • Teeny Pantyliner – a smaller version of the mini, suitable for daily discharge or as backup protection.

Materials
Lunapads Pads feature a 100% organic cotton flannel base, topped with an absorbent panel made of 2 layers 100% organic cotton fleece, and 1 layer of ultrathin nylon to minimize soaking through. Liners are made from 2 layers of 100% organic cotton fleece. Pantyliners have a 100% organic cotton flannel base, topped with a panel made of 2 layers of 100% organic cotton fleece.

Organic cotton is a far superior alternative to chemical-laden conventional cotton. More and more farmers around the world are growing cotton without costly, harmful chemicals. Their yield is high and the quality of the cotton they grow is equal to or better than conventionally grown cotton. Their methods support biodiversity and healthy ecosystems, improve the quality of soil and often use less water.

Sustainability
Each Lunapad replaces hundreds of disposable tampons and sanitary napkins over the course of its lifetime. Used and cared for as directed, Lunapads last for at least 3 to 5 years, and possibly far longer. Each year, women dispose of more than 20 billion disposable pads and tampons – that’s 10,000 menstrual pads and tampons in an average woman’s lifetime – according to waste consultant Franklin Associates. Disposable pads and tampons (including packaging and applicators) also require tremendous resources to produce, and can take hundreds of years to degrade in landfills.

In addition to supporting a cleaner planet by curbing the environmental impact of disposable tampons and pads, Lunapads also save you money. Replacing disposables with Lunapads could save you anywhere between $200 to $1,000. Click here to see a cost comparison.

About Lunapads International
Lunapads International is a women-owned small business based in Vancouver, Canada. Their mission is to help women have healthier and more positive experiences of their menstrual cycles, and by extension, their bodies overall. Lunapads are made in Vancouver at a small, family-owned garment manufacturing facility adjacent to the Lunapads offices. Partial proceeds of Lunapads sales benefit Pads4Girls, a unique program that provides girls in developing nations with sustainable menstrual supplies, thereby helping them to stay in school.

Care Instructions
Lunapads can be handwashed or machine washed. Soak or rinse Lunapads in cold water prior to washing them with your regular detergent. Some women add a cleaning agent to the soaking process, but this is optional. Washed feminine pads may be air or machine-dried. They will shrink somewhat if you put them in the dryer, as they are made from cotton, but it makes them nice and soft! If staining is a concern, there are many effective non-chlorine based cleaning products available at your local natural foods store. Do not use chlorine bleach or fabric softeners as it will degrade the quality of the pads and harm the environment.

We recommend washing Lunapads once prior to using - not only does this ensure they are clean for you but it also helps to increase the absorbency.

Lunapads may be returned to us in their original condition. We accept returns on unopened, unused personal items only.

Comments about Product:

I like these a lot - I've been using them a few months now and am very happy. The only downside is that they're bulky. But the feel of the cloth is much better than any pad I've ever used - I hadn't realized how much pads irritated my skin until I switched to these. They aren't bad to clean either. I keep a small pail behind my toilet and put them in there to soak out, and then I wash them in hot water. They come out fine. I do use the colored ones though.

Comments about Product:

I have been using Luna Pads for many years and I shudder at the idea of disposables now. My body feels so much better, my periods are shorter with fewer cramps and my budget is much improved. The amazing Womyn who run this company are making a huge difference in the lives of thousands, including kids in developing nations by donating pads, offering educational information on sustainable alternatives to disposables and just making it fun to love your period. Go Luna Pads!!

Comments about Product:

Initially I was a little skeptical about your products, but after receiving a Lunapad from a friend I am now a believer. The Lunapad provided me security and comfort during my cycle. The best thing is, I can share this with my girlfriend. Thank you!

Comments about Product:

Just wanted to let you know that I have used my Lunapads twice now and I love the feel of cloth. I'm never touching disposables again! It is also a lot easier to care for them than I thought as well! I have been telling women here in Australia about Lunapads and handing out your brochures. Hopefully more people will start to think about it and switch.
