DIY Household CleanersShare


There's no need to spend money on expensive store-bought cleaners when you can avoid harmful chemicals and save tons of natural resources by making your own DIY cleaners. Let us help you save money, avoid potentially toxic chemicals and reduce consumption with these handy homemade cleaners!

You'll find a large majority of these ingredients in your local supermarket, health foods store, or even right here at Reuseit.com. You may already even have these sitting in your pantry or fridge, so before you buy anything, find out what you already have, and get DIY-ing!

What you'll need:
• Water
• Castile soap (bar and liquid) - Dr. Bronner's makes for a great, multi-purpose one!
• Lemons
• Baking soda
• White vinegar
• Essential oils - purchase your own Aura Cacia Essential Oils in our Personal Care collection
• Reusable containers and jars
• A bucket
• Reusable spray bottles - purchase our reuseit Reusable DIY Cleaning Spray Bottle in our Green Cleaning Supplies collection
• Super washing soda
• Borax

DIY All-Purpose Cleaner
• 1/2 cup of white vinegar
• Juice from 1 lemon
• 2 cups of water
• 1/2 teaspoon of Castile soap

Mix ingredients and spray as needed. Always test on a small surface area before applying in large quantities. Wipe clean when finished.

DIY All-Purpose Scrub
• 1/4 cup of baking soda
• 1 tablespoon of Castile soap 
• Add water to your own desired consistency

Sprinkle baking soda and soap on surface, add water, and get scrubbin'!

Homemade Disinfectant
• 1/2 cup of white vinegar
• 2 cups of hot water
• 1 teaspoon of super washing soda
• 10 drops of tea tree oil (optional)

Mix ingredients together, and spray as needed. Wipe surface clean when you've finished.

Glass/Window Cleaner
• 1 cup of white vinegar
• 1 cup of water
• 3 drops of your favorite essential oil or peppermint for a natural, non-toxic fragrance

This recipe also works well on mirrors! Mix ingredients together and pour in your spray bottle. Spray as needed and wipe with a reusable microfiber cloth.

Homemade Tile Floor Cleaner
• 1 gallon of hot water
• 2 tablespoons of white vinegar
• 2 teaspons of Castile soap
• 2 tablespoons of super washing soda
• 10-20 drops of your favorite essential oils for fragrance


Also works well on cleaning vinyl floors. Mix ingredients together in your bucket and wash surfaces with a mop or microfiber cloths.

Homemade Hardwood Floor Cleaner
• 1 gallon of hot water
• 1/2 cup of white vinegar
• A few drops of any essential oil for a little bit of fragrance (always optional)

Mix your ingredients in a bucket and wash hardwood floors with a mop or microfiber cloth as needed.


Carpet Freshener
• 2 cups of baking soda
• 10-20 drops of essential oil for fragrance

And that's it! Mix together and place in jar with top. Sprinkle on carpet and after 15 minutes, vacuum carpet.

DIY Powdered Laundry Detergent
• 1 bar of grated Castile soap
• 2 cups of borax
• 2 cups of super washing soda
• 30 drops of your favorite essential oil for a non-toxic and chemical-free fragrance

Mix ingredients together and place in a reusable airtight container. You can use just 1 tablespoon of laundry detergent per load of laundry.
