About the bags
These ingenious green produce bags offer a natural way to absorb the enzyme-producing gases that cause vegetables to deteriorate. Debbie Meyer Green Bags (formerly known as Evert-Fresh Green Bags) are made from low density-polyethylene that is coated with a fine layer of natural clay containing high levels of a mineral proven to absorb ethylene gas. (When produce ripens it emits ethylene which speeds up the ripening / rotting process).

Using Debbie Meyer Green Bags can extend the life of produce 3 to 10 times. Perhaps it's so hard to find these at grocery stores because using them cuts down on wasted fruits and vegetable waste, which means you buy less. Debbie Meyer Green Bags can help you avoid throwing away uneaten produce -- saving you money and while helping cut down on waste. Green Bags can also play a role in lowering your carbon footprint since less waste leads to buying less, and making fewer trips to the grocery store and/or market.

Debbie Meyer's trademarked, green-colored bags also naturally cuts down on damaging effects of UV rays resulting in far less vitamin loss.

Reusing Debbie Meyer Green Bags
Each bag has the capacity to absorb ethylene 8-10 times. To reuse, simply rinse with water only (no soap) and let thoroughly dry (we recommend turning inside out to dry) After 8-10 uses we suggest you continue to reuse the bag as a produce bag especially for items you plan on eating quickly and/or are not prone to rapid decomposition.

Reducing food waste helps limit greenhouse gases
Food waste produces methane (a greenhouse gas) when it decays in landfills. Reduce your food waste and you help limit this gas. Plus, by wasting less you’ll also help decrease the energy and materials needed to produce, package and transport food – all which add to greenhouse gas production. In fact, in the UK alone, food transport accounts for 25% of all the miles driven by large vehicles!

Product Use Tips:
  • Store produce in a cool, dry and dark place.
  • Don't crowd or combine different product in same bag.
  • Be sure to rinse bags after each use and dry thoroughly.
  • If excess moisture is present, dry produce thoroughly and place in dry green bag with natural paper towel or coffee filter.
  • For best results, keep bags shut by tying in a knot or securing with a clothes pin.

Story Behind The Bags
Scientists involved in Antarctic exploration were searching for ways to prolong the freshness of produce. During their research, they found a region in Japan where for thousands of years farmers have been storing produce in mountain caves with amazing results.

The caves were dark, consistently cool, and dry. But it was discovered that the key to the remarkable preserving properties of the caves was a clay called "oya," and the cave mountain was made of it. The oya absorbed the ethylene gas that produce gives off as it matures. Debbie Meyer Green Bags combine ancient knowledge thousands of years old with space age technology for preserving produce. All that, in a simple, green bag.

Cool Fact
The active ingredient in Debbie Meyer Green Bags is recommended by the United States Department of Agriculture in its Handbook #668 to counteract the negative effects of ethylene gas on fresh fruits and vegetables.

I've only used the bags to store bananas so far. It seems to help them keep their color but they also seem to get soggy. I'll update the review when I use the bags with something else.

5.0 seem to work pretty good.

Comments about Product:

I have only had these bags for a few weeks but the produce I put in them has lasted longer than previously when I have put produce in my refrigerator. I usually can only use one piece of fresh ginger once because I don't need it that often and it goes bad before the next time, but this week I used a previously cut into piece of ginger!! So that was nice. I plan to buy them again.

5.0 they do work, wish was still Evert-Fresh

Comments about Product:

They do work if you use them right. Bananas are very tricky, some people do succeed using the bags but for most of us, it's better to just separate the bananas and put them various places around the kitchen to keep them from influencing each other too much, and then refrigerating them if they are getting ahead of your desire to eat them. The skins turn black in the fridge, but the banana is fine. Cut fruit/veg are not likely to do so well in the green bags, not really intended for those. The idea is to slow down the ageing process by allowing the gases emitted by the still-living fruits/vegs to leave the space. The green bags seem good for unwashed apples, strawberries, blueberries, grapes still on the stem (if they are firm, not easy to disattach from the stem, and not moist when purchased), avocados (uncut), uncut bell peppers of all colors, pears, citrus fruit, etc. and also whole tomatoes (not refrigerated). I would suggest trying them on any uncut fruit or veg to experiment. Just don't wash anything beforehand, and putting a folded paper towel at the bottom helps because it absorbs the moisture. Also check on your goodies periodically (especially when experimenting) - you can just pull the stuff out of the bag, wipe them dry if necessary, use the paper towel to wipe down the inside of the bag and then open up and put aside to dry for reuse for something else and then insert a new folded paper towel and replace the fruit/veg. The bags just need to be rinsed under the faucet - I just put some hot water in the bag and shake a bit, then I use one of those nice bag dryer things (use 2 prongs for the large size bag). I recommend not turning them inside out if, like me, you have periodic flying insect invasions as well as kitty hair etc. floating around your airspace .... less likely to have landing sites on the inside of your bags that way. You can put a little piece of self-stick label on a bottom edge of the bag (on the outside) and just put an x every time you use it, if you want to easily track the number of uses. But I imagine it's more complex than number of uses, depends on how long the bag was used (which can vary tremendously) per use/per wash. Sometimes I don't actually bother washing the bag, to be honest, if it seems clean. Just don't use soap on it - that could inactivate the mineral coating.

Comments about Product:

I have used these bags for sometime now and have mixed thoughts. Cut cukes and any other "wet" produce get slimy just as quickly as with regular store plastic bags, but I was sold when I put a cut avocado in the bag and it was still green (no brown!) after one week. I agree with other customers though about the time of use; it's hard to keep track. I think many of mine are getting overused so they have not worked as well lately.

Comments about Product:

I see some reviews that are stating these bags did not work for them. I don;t see how that can be. You must be buying produce that is not fresh. Bananas will last me a week. Brocolli 2 weeks without being limp or turing yellow, lettuce 2-3 weeks. THe key may be NOT WASHING your produce before you put it in the bag. I wash mine before I use it. I have saved so much money using these bags.

Comments about Product:

Well, the bananas spoiled in one day, the cucumbers got fuzzy in three days, and the tomato developed a full beard after a week, and it was in the fridge! Pre-bag, the tomatoes would keep for over a week on a kitchen shelf! I have always avoided "as seen on TV" because that usually means over-priced and worthless, and this, once again, proved me right.

Comments about Product:

This is not a gimmick. They actually keep lettuce fresher in the fridge for a longer period of time. I eat more greens now because they are fresh there in the bag ready to go. Do not be put off by the dreaded "As seen on TV" graphic. They work and work well. The best testimony that I can give is that when these run out I am going to buy more. Would keep lettuce without them

Comments about Product:

For some time, I bought Evert bags from my organics supplier, but they disappeared from the product lists some time back. When I was using my last bag, I happened upon your website. I was so pleased to see these bags, I bought them for my friends as Christmas gifts. The reception was phenomenal. Everyone was excited to receive them, after seeing mine, and they are even happier after using them. Last night, I opened a bag of broccoli I'd forgotten for 2 weeks and it was perfectly fresh. Thanks a million!

Comments about Product:

They work for a little while but in a couple of months they are the very plastic bags we are trying to avoid. Garbage. I also hated washing them out. They get holes and seem to always be kind of stinky so I threw them out. It's also hard to keep track of when 8-10 uses is over. Overall, yuck! I've found that using the muslin bags at the grocery and then unloading items in ceramic bowls in my produce drawers with a reusable E.G.G Ethylene Gas Guardian works great, is more convenient, and makes less of an environmental impact.

Comments about Product:

I used to be able to go to the store every other day to get fresh vegetables. With the downturn of the economy it has affected my ability to keep going back and forth to feed my family fresh vegetables. A neighbor told me about reuseable bags and I ordered them. She had never used them before but had heard of them. I gave her a package of them. I was scheduled to leave for an out of state visit on the day they came. I knew my vegetables would be no good when I returned 10 days later. I packaged up my vegetables anyway. I was amazed to find my carrots still stiff, my potatoes did not start growing new buds and even my lettuce was crisp 10 DAYS later. I rushed over to my neighbors to show her and she was just as pleased with the bags. They are great bags and I wash them out to reuse them. I have 3 of them hanging on my clothes line right now...

Comments about Product:

After two weeks of use, the bags seem to perform as advertised. Cut green peppers have not developed the slimy edge they get after a couple of days in regular plastic bags. Lettuce has stayed crispier longer, and lettuce that was already past its prime didn't get worse. The only item that hasn't fared well so far are mushrooms. They do better stored in small paper bags.

5.0 These work precisely as advertised

Comments about Product:

These work precisely as advertised. I find them especially useful for bananas, which I like very ripe. As soon as they reach the degree of ripeness I like, I pop them in the bag and they stop ripening. It's like magic. They stay at the proper state for several days. And all my other produce is the same -- I ripen fruit to the desired point then refrigerate in one of these bags and they hold at the right degree of ripeness perfectly. All my vegetables stay fresh from the day I bring them home and put them in these bags. I only have to shop once a week now to have fresh produce -- I used to visit my produce market twice a week. I'm very picky about the freshness of our fruits and vegetables and these bags have made my life easier and they save me time and trouble. A great buy.

Comments about Product:

Sorry to be a dud, but I was VERY disappointed in these bags. Maybe they gave me an extra day on the bananas, but I expected more. They are better than regular plastic bags from the grocery store for apples and other fruits, but I would recommend the zip lock bags sold here 10 to 1 over these bags. Now THE ZIPLOCK bags are fantastic! I take them to the store with me and put my fruit and veggie purchases straight into them instead of into the store's bags. Pears and bananas last for days and days. The ziplock ones are a huge money saver for me and my two teenage boys. I can overbuy fruit when it's on sale and it lasts and lasts.

1.0 What a coincidence

Comments about Product:

What a coincidence. I was intending to contact you about my recent order and your e-mail came up. Actually, I am not at all happy with the bags after using them since my order arrived. The head lettuce started going rusty brown within a week, and the peppers don't look very good, also put in green bags at same time. The bananas went south faster than when I use my old method, wrapping them in a kitchen terrycloth towel and then placing them in a plastic bag before refrigerating. The skins go brown within a few days but they look just as good (or better) than trying them in the bags. Sorry to be so negative but I expected better. Josephine Dresser

Comments about Product:

Definitely not worth the money. These bags helped keep my berries fresh for one extra day than just refrigeration alone, and didn't seem to do much for any other produce than if they were in regular plastic bags and put in the crisper. For items left on the counter top and not refrigerated, all they did was cause moisture buildup/consensation that needed to be wiped off everyday or else mold would grow. I should've known better when I saw these on an infomercial.

Comments about Product:

I haven't used these enough to know if they really keep stuff fresher longer. However they may pay for themselves in another way... I brought them to the grocery store and put my produce directly in them while shopping (instead of using those horrible non-reusable plastic produce bags) and they gave me a 5-cent bag credit for each of them! And that was in addition to the 5-cent credit for each of my reusable grocery bags! I took another reviewers advice and am using a Sharpie to keep track of how many times I've used each bag. Getting the bags to dry out after washing can be a bit of a pain, so I plan to order the Plastic Bag & Bottle Dryer (AGO-01) as I hear it works like a champ for these.

I started using these bags last year and have been so happy with them. I take them with me to the grocery store and load my produce directly into them. No more wasting time switching out once I get home. They last for quite awhile (I haven't actually counted) and can be rinsed between usings if necessary. We have definitely recouped their cost by keeping produce longer, especially fresh stuff from the farmer's market. And when their food preservation life is over, we use them as lunch bags or trash bags.
