Finally, here's a way to avoid accumulating all of those plastic produce bags! Why fill up your reusable shopping bag with dozens of single-use plastic fruit and vegetable bags that often get tossed right away and rarely get reused? Here's a smart solution to cut down on another major source of plastic bag waste.

Design & functionality
The extra-large size lightweight, muslin cotton bags are bigger than standard plastic produce bags found in most grocery stores, and they're great for oranges, broccoli and other leafy vegetables. The smaller size is great for a few pieces of fruit or small vegetables. Used with our produce savers, you can save money as you help the environment by dramatically increasing the shelf life of your fruits and vegetables.

Also great for grains and other bulk products to replace single-use baggies when packing dry snacks, nuts and lunch items (and they make great, customizable gift or party favor bags). Alton Brown of The Food Network's Good Eats featured these handy bags to cook stuffing in on a Thanksgiving episode!

  • Extra Large = 34g (0.09 lb)
  • Small = 15g (0.04 lb)

Materials
Organic cotton is a far superior alternative to chemical-laden conventional cotton. More and more farmers around the world are growing cotton without costly, harmful chemicals. Their yield is high and the quality of the cotton they grow is equal to or better than conventionally grown cotton. Their methods support biodiversity and healthy ecosystems, improve the quality of soil and often use less water.

Sustainability
Growing organically takes more time, requires more knowledge and skill, and, at least for now, costs a bit more. But it is worth it since it doesn't contain any hidden costs to our environment. This bag can help you eliminate thousands of plastic bags over its lifetime. Our wide range of reusable bags are also built to last, which saves both money and natural resources.

a little bummed

Was really looking forward to these, but was a little bummed when they arrived for two reasons: 1) I thought I was getting 4 in a package instead of 1 (clearly my error) and 2) my produce does not stay crisp very long in them (duh, it's muslin). I think $4.45(plus shipping) for a single, muslin bag is a bit much, maybe because I support localism more than fair trade.

Lessons learned: 1) read the information page a little more closely before ordering, and 2) try the polyester bags as an alternative to turning every faucet, handle and vase in my kitchen into a plastic bag drying rack. Or have a little fun with DIY night.

muslin snack bags as book bags at school

by Aimee O - 09/2011

This product is great! I use them in my 2nd grade classroom as book bags. They are durable enough for 7 year-olds to use on a daily basis for carrying and storing their reading books. I first bought a set of 20 for my classroom 3 years ago and those bags are still in great shape!

Produce bags

by Julie W - 05/2011

I love the produce bags, we go to the farmer's market every Sunday and all the farmer's comment on them and they are happy we are not using their plastic bags. Other people have asked where I got them and I tell them about your website. My husband says I am saving the world, one bag at a time.

I like the bag but it is an awkward size. I do enjoy using it though instead of plastic!

Nice fabric bags

Well-made fabric bags that wash well and have simple, non-clashing designs. The drawstrings hold up well. I use them to store my son's blocks. Not inexpensive, but until I learn to sew, probably worthwhile.

Durable, versatile, sustainable,

by Suzi M - 01/2011

Long lasting in every way! I use these every day and have had the same handfull (both sizes) for over a year. Crumbs shake out easily, and all produce stains have washed out quickly. Though they are machine washable, they hand wash and hang dry quickly! I love the basic look, I think that adds to their "long lasting" quality. My other snack and misc carry bags are prints that I get in & out of the mood to use but these are ever handy in any situation. I've also used the small bags to carry toiletries & make up products, and the larger size has come in handy to carry a change of clothes. I often keep these in my pack or purse "just in case".

Not quite right size.

I ordered these bags to use as bread bags (for home made cinnamon bread gifts) for xmas presents. Unfortunately, the small bags were too small, and the large bags were too large. I do like the bags a lot, and I will use them for other things. Thanks.

Love these bags

by Sandra B - 12/2010

Every time I went to the organic farm to get my vegetables I kept thinking there has to be a better way besides using the plastic bags provided at the farm. I was so happy to find these cotton bags, they work wonderfully, and I can now shop without guilt. When I get home I just transport the produce items to another container that I keep in the refrigerator. When they get dirty I just throw them in the washing machine. The best thing is I never have to use another wretched plastic bag.

nice size but was a little disappointed - looks like something I can whip up on my sewing machine in a couple of minutes. Great if you're a non-sewer, though.

Organic Cotton Muslin bags

by margaret k - 12/2010

I like the muslin bags except they are too big to be snack bags. (for pretzels or goldfish) I ordered them because they were much cheaper than the other snack bags that I have seen. I would love for them to be smaller! I use them to put my children's whole snack in which does work great, just not what I intended.
